Ethereum is an open-source decentralized blockchain that supports smart contracts. The platform’s native cryptocurrency is Ether (ETH). In terms of market capitalization, Ether is second only to Bitcoin.
Vitalik Buterin, a programmer, founded Ethereum in 2013. Gavin Wood, Charles Hoskinson, Anthony Di Iorio and Joseph Lubin were also founders of Ethereum. The network went live on July 30, 2015, having started development work in 2014 and received crowdfunding. Anyone can build persistent and irreversible decentralized applications on Ethereum for users to interact with.
Decentralized finance (DeFi) applications allow cryptocurrency users to borrow against their assets or lend them against interest without the need for traditional financial intermediaries such as brokers, exchanges or banks. Ethereum also allows users to create and exchange NFTs, which are unique tokens representing ownership of an associated asset or privilege recognized by a variety of institutions.
Additionally, several other cryptocurrencies use the ERC-20 token specification on the Ethereum blockchain and have used it for initial coin offerings. The Ethereum 2.0 upgrade cycle includes a move to Proof of Stake and the use of sharding to increase transaction throughput.
The EVM’s instruction set is Turing-complete. The formation of fungible (ERC20) and non-fungible (ERC721) tokens with various properties, crowdfunding (e.g. initial coin offerings), decentralized finance, decentralized exchanges, decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs), gaming, prediction markets and gambling were all popular Ethereum applications.
