Men’s athletics opens the 2022 season with the Middlebury Winter Classic

Santi Canella tied the school grade in the triple jump.

The men’s indoor track and field team kicked off their 2022 season by hosting the Middlebury Winter Classic at Virtue Field House on Saturday. The Panthers finished third with 89.50 points. The University of Vermont won the meeting with 168 points, followed by Plymouth State in second place (143 points). Middlebury will continue their streak of three straight home meetings in January next Saturday when they host the Middlebury Winterfell at Virtue Field House from 11:00am.

Santa Canella jumped a distance of 41’11.25″ in the triple jump, setting the program record set by Silas Wong in 2011.

Aaron Tobias won the 60m with a time of 7.18 while he was third in the 200m (23.27).

Daniel Brey and James Hetherington took the top two spots in the 35-pound weight throw. Brey won the event with a throw of 42’3.25″, while Hetherington took the lead with 42’2″.

Zack sieve finished second in the shot put, throwing 45’3″ back just 4.25 inches behind the winner. Logan Cosgrove rounded out the podium in third with a throw of 37’10”.

Kaleb Fineske finished second in the high jump with a jump of 5’10.75″, sharing the top spot but using two jumps instead of one.

Jefferson Hill Third in the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.06.
