Revisited Red’s Cafe in Haysville

There are certain meals that bring back old memories. One of these is a hamburger steak doused with A1 sauce. Growing up it was considered a special meal at home, and going back to eating at Doc’s Steakhouse they were a common order because they were so affordable. It was a meal I’ve been craving for a while. I decided to stop by Red’s cafe in Haysville, KS to sate my nostalgia.

Red’s Cafe is a restaurant I have not been to in over a decade. I stopped by for lunch and was certainly glad I did. My meal started with an unsweetened iced tea, but not just any tasty cup. It was a huge mug that also doubled as a workout for my left arm.

My hamburger steak came with a complimentary side salad. Nothing special here; just a simple ranch salad with a side dish.

The real treat came when my hamburger steak arrived with a bun, green beans, mashed potatoes with brown gravy (because brown gravy is the best) and a brand new bottle of A1 Sauce.

Look, I get it, A1 is nothing special and it’s taboo when it comes to steak. But 1) I didn’t want anything fancy, and 2) it was a hamburger steak and 3) I wanted as little bougie as possible. That ticked every box.

Everything was delicious and just what I wanted. The brown gravy was perfectly paired with the (I tasted) boxed mashed potatoes. And I may have used a whole bottle of A1 dressing. This wasn’t a 5 star meal but it was enough stars to make me happy.

And aside from the food, the service was fantastic. It had that real diner and small town feel.

Next time I come back I will try their breakfast as I have never had it before.

Here is their menu:

happy food,
whirl
