A new RV park in Foxton aims to give people more access to the area’s cultural and entertainment attractions.

The New Zealand Motorhome Caravan Association (NZMCA) has opened a motorhome site on the Foxton Racing Club site.

NZMCA National Manager James Imlach said they were drawn to Foxton because it was the ideal stopover between Wellington and the adventures of the National Park and Mt Ruapehu.

“Our members tell us they are entertained by cultural attractions, walkways, bike paths, beaches, rivers and breathtaking views and scenery.

Foxton Racing Club President Steve Kupa says they have experience hosting large events that draw many RVs to their site.

“Te Awahou Foxton, with the beach and the Tararua Ranges as a backdrop, has it all.”

The Foxton site had a capacity of 65 seats and visitors had to be NZMCA members.

You could use the park for a fee of $5 per adult per night.

The association had 51 members-only parks across the country and only certified, self-contained mobile homes were allowed.

Steve Kupa, President of Foxton Racing Club, said they have experience hosting large events like the annual National Pony Club Show Jumping Championships, which drew many RVs to their site.

“It was a logical next step for us to work with the NZMCA, which has the full support of the Horowhenua District Council. The camper place will benefit everyone.”

Horowhenua District Mayor Bernie Wanden said it is evidence that Te Awahou Foxton is a future visitor destination.

Horowhenua Mayor Bernie Wanden says the park will benefit everyone involved.

“The new RV park is a really big step in the collaboration between the NZMCA and the City Council. It maximizes the opportunities at Foxton that benefit everyone involved.”

Foxton and Foxton Beach have been home to experiences like jet ski rentals on the Manawatū River and Cable Wakeboard Park.

Visitors could also enjoy a multicultural experience at Te Awahou Riverside Cultural Park.

Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom was home to a renowned art gallery and the Piriharakeke and Oranjehof museums, which told the stories of Mana Whenua and Dutch immigrants.

Other attractions included the De Molen Windmill, the Flax Stripper Museum and the River Loop Walkway.

Arjan van der Boon, director of marketing for Te Awahou Riverside Cultural Park, said he hopes the RV park will bring even more visitors to the area.

Before Covid-19, a number of tour buses stopped and many local tourists still passed by.

“Our goal is to make Foxton the center of tourism in the region,” he said.
