The Adams County Bar Association sponsors its ninth annual Essay and Scholarship Contest. Any high school graduate in Adams County with at least a B-average who is considering a career in law is invited to submit an essay on this year’s theme, “The Constitution in Times of Change.” First place winner receives $2,500; second place, $1,500; and $500 will be awarded to up to three honorable mentions. The winners will be announced at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 29 in a ceremony in the historic courtroom of the Adams County Bar. Submissions are due by Monday April 4th. Free Winter Walk with Healthy Adams County, Sunday, March 13, starting at 1:30 p.m. from Gettysburg Rec Park, 545 Long Lane, Gettysburg. The walk is 4.5 miles long and takes you through the amusement park to the armory on West Confederate Avenue. At the VA Memorial, Randy Phiel will share some history. The walk crosses the fields (which can be muddy) used by Pickett’s squad and emerges on Hancock Avenue at The Angle. The walk then returns via neighborhood roads. Adams County Literacy Council and Murder Mysteries Will Travel present “Sour Grapes” Friday April 8 at 6pm at the Looking Barn, Littlestown. This mystery, dinner and dessert fundraiser is being organized by Brookmere Winery’s Country Class Catering with Cash Bar. Admission tickets cost $55. Proceeds benefit adult education programs. Al Anon meets Tuesdays at 12:00 p.m. at Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, 208 Baltimore St. The 12-step program is for friends and family who are concerned about the alcohol problems of others. All are welcome. Parking lot behind the church. Enter through the side door under the portico, go straight to the stairs or the elevator. At the top of the stairs, go through the door to the right into a large room with several tables.

Just for Today The Al-Anon Family Group offers support to those affected by another person’s alcohol use. A designer bag bingo featuring Coach, Vera Bradley and Michael Kors will be held April 3 at the Biglerville Fire Company sponsored by the Ladies’ Aid Crew. Gift cards are attached to each bag. The East Berlin community center is holding a fundraiser for takeaway meatloaf. The price per meal is $10 and includes mashed potatoes, green beans with ham and a bun. The Fairfield Alcoholics Anonymous group meets on Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. at 201 W. Main St. This is a closed meeting.

Gettysburg VFW Post 15 The Friday night special is shrimp alfredo, salad, roll and dessert. There will also be a regular menu. Dinner is served from 17:00 to 19:30

The Heidlersburg Fire Company, 2720 Heidlersburg Road, Gettysburg, is hosting a Roast Beef and Fried Oysters To Go Dinner on March 19 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Dinner consists of roast beef and fried oysters or fried shrimp or fried fish patty, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, corn and dessert. The Hunterstown Ruritan Club is hosting an all-you-can-eat breakfast on Saturday, March 12 from 7-10:30 am at the Great Conewago Presbyterian Church, 174 Red Bridge Road, Gettysburg. Adult price is $7; children 5-12, $3.50; and under 5 eat free. The Wenksville Cemetery Association is requesting that all wintered grave decorations be removed by April 2. Easter flowers may be laid on or after Palm Sunday, April 10th.

The Friends of Legal Services 36th Annual Book Sale drop-off days are Saturday, May 14 and May 21, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Chambersburg Mall to donate new and used books of all kinds, artwork, CDs including audio books, DVDs and records Music, puzzles and board games. Don’t give away encyclopedias or textbooks. Proceeds help provide civil legal services to low-income local families. Follow the signs to the drop-off point entrance; Volunteers help unload the books. Receipts for tax purposes available upon request.

The Shippensburg Civil War Roundtable will meet Tuesday, March 15 at 7:00 p.m. in the basement of Christ United Methodist Church, 47 E. King St., Shippensburg.
