Beverly’s Hearty Slice is giving away 250 take-out meals tonight from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at Kendall-Perkins Park. The group regularly distributes pizza and water at three locations every other Friday, which is also continuing as planned.

Southern Star Central Gas Pipeline is a sponsor of the Thanksgiving event for the second year in a row. Beverly’s Hearty Slice founder Travis Owsley attributes the nonprofit’s success to God, the support of the community, and the many sponsors.

“I’ve never seen us get this big,” Owsley said. “All glory be to God. The community support, from volunteering to sponsorships, and multiple anonymous donors – it’s amazing.”

Owsley named the company after his mother, who he said was always inviting people to her house for meals. He said what sets Beverly’s Hearty Slice apart from other nonprofits is how they welcome donors and sponsors to get involved in the distribution effort.

“The community has just seen good work being done and wants to be a part of it,” he said. “We’re one of the few nonprofits that invites donors to come to an event and see the benefit.”

In addition to takeout and pizza, Pepsi offers a selection of free takeout items. The event also features a coat gift and performances by the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra.

Owsley founded the nonprofit in September 2020 at a time when positivity was scarce.

“I wanted to honor my mother’s memory; She was always so open and generous,” he said. “People were struggling and getting fired, and I was just looking for a way to spread a little hope and some positivity.”

With three thriving locations, Owsley looks forward to expanding into four different states next year.

Mark Gaunya, a successful entrepreneur in the healthcare industry, met Owsley by chance at an airport last year. The two shared the same grief: missing their mother.

Gaunya contributed $10,000 to Owsley’s efforts and launched an expansion plan. The additional locations will be put into operation next summer.

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The Tenderloin-based St. Anthony Foundation is hosting several events to “help neighbors affected by homelessness,” including a block party, according to a press release.

The first event is a turkey fundraiser and sanitary kit preparation on Saturday, November 19 at 11 am at the St. Anthony’s location at 150 Golden Gate Avenue. At this event, donors, volunteers and team members will prepare essential items to give away to those in need as part of a hygiene kit.

This includes socks, hats and scarves for the cold winter.

People who can’t go in person can also donate food and clothing online through the nonprofit’s website.

The second event is a distribution and block party on Tuesday, November 22 at 11:45 a.m. where “community members, donors, volunteers and citizen leaders” will “offer guests holiday cookies, hot chocolate and hygiene kits. ”

These leaders are expected to include San Francisco Mayor London Breed, San Francisco Police Commissioner Bill Scott, San Francisco Fire Department Chief Jeanine Nicholson, and other firefighters.

“These grooming kits are an important tool in building compassionate relationships with our struggling San Francisco neighbors, especially as the winter season approaches,” said Nils Behnke, CEO of St. Anthony’s, in a press release. “We are blessed to invite people into our community to make a difference in their lives, not just our guests but our volunteers, team members and donors.”

St. Anthony’s noted that food prices “have risen to levels not seen in more than 40 years” and that St. Anthony’s expects to serve more than 2,600 meals on Thanksgiving Day itself.

Dave Chappelle, who hosted NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” for the third time, opened the show with a roughly 15-minute monologue that explored hip-hop artist Yes’ anti-Semitic remarks, the midterm elections and former President Donald Trump’s political appeal Trump dealt with.

The comedian, known for stirring controversy and defying his most vocal critics, didn’t directly address the furore over his comments about the transgender community in a Netflix comedy special released last year.

Chappelle took the stage in Rockefeller Center’s Studio 8H and began his monologue with a lengthy riff on Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, who was widely condemned for making a series of anti-Semitic comments.

The comedian read a short statement: “I condemn anti-Semitism in all its forms and stand with my friends in the Jewish community — and this, Kanye, buys you some time.”

Chappelle mocked Ye, as did Brooklyn Nets star Kyrie Irving, who posted a link to an anti-Semitic film on Twitter. But some of Chappelle’s comments seemed, at least in part, designed to shock and provoke.

“I’ve been to Hollywood and that’s exactly what I saw: it’s a lot of Jews, how many,” Chappelle said, laughing. “But that doesn’t mean anything, you know what I mean? There are a lot of black people in Ferguson, Missouri, but that doesn’t mean we run the place.”

Chappelle’s comments about anti-Semitism drew a mixed reaction on Twitter, where some viewers criticized him for appearing to downplay Ye’s remarks or his handling of problematic stereotypes.

Chappelle eventually turned his attention to other issues, including the midterm elections.

He mocked Herschel Walker, the scandal-plagued Republican nominee for the Georgia Senate who is heading for a runoff against incumbent Democratic Senator Raphael Warnock in December.

“I don’t want to badmouth him because he’s black,” Chapelle said, referring to Walker. “But I have to admit, he’s obviously stupid.”

Chappelle then explained why he thinks Trump is popular with voters in places like Ohio, where he lives. He described the former president (and possible candidate for 2024) as an “honest liar”.

“He was loved because the people of Ohio had never seen anyone like him,” Chappelle said. “He’s an honest liar. He said, ‘I know the system is rigged because I’m using it.'”

Chappelle previously hosted “SNL” over the weekend after the last two presidential elections.

He stepped under four days after Trump’s disgruntled victory in 2016 and joked in his monologue that voters voted for an “internet troll.” He returned four years later, taking the stage hours after President Joe Biden allegedly defeated Trump.

In recent years, Chappelle has garnered intense attention for his public statements about transgender people, particularly after Netflix released his recent stand-up special, The Closer.

The Closer, released October 5, 2021, drew accusations of transphobia and plunged the streaming giant into a chaotic PR crisis.

Hundreds of LGBTQ activists and Netflix employees marched outside the company’s Los Angeles headquarters later that month to protest the special.

For their part, those responsible for Netflix stood by Chappelle.

“We work hard to support their creative freedom — even if it means there will always be content on Netflix that some people find harmful,” Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos told employees at the time.

Netflix and Chappelle continued to make it clear that they would stick together, announcing in February that the comedian would produce and host four specials featuring stand-ups handpicked by him.

In late April this year, Chappelle defended himself during a sold-out performance at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on the first night of Netflix’s annual comedy festival.

Chappelle, who paced the stage and smoked a cigarette, told thousands of viewers on April 29 that he made “The Closer” with good intentions. He then made several jokes about trans people, including college swim star Lia Thomas.

Four days later, Chappelle was physically assaulted on stage at the Hollywood Bowl, assaulted and attacked by a man with a replica gun.

The suspect, who identifies as bisexual, later said he found Chapelle’s show “triggering”. In May he was charged with four counts.

Chappelle was not injured, and a Netflix spokesman condemned the attack.

The 48th season of “SNL” premiered on October 1 and past hosts have included Miles Teller, Brendan Gleeson, Megan Thee Stallion, Jack Harlow and Amy Schumer.

CEC is holding a hearing with oil executives and experts on November 29th

The oil industry made $63 billion in profits in 90 days as Californians paid record gas prices

Gov. Newsom has proposed a price-cutting penalty that will put unexpected oil company gains back into the pockets of Californians

SACRAMENTO — Oil companies have billed Californians record prices for gasoline even as crude oil prices have fallen, resulting in record profits for the oil industry over the past three months. The California Energy Commission (CEC) today announced a public hearing for November 29 to bring in oil sector executives and experts to provide answers on gasoline price increases amid record profits, refinery expectations and how to prevent such price increases in the future be able.

“We are taking action to get answers for Californians who have paid for these record gains from gas price hikes. They were given the opportunity to provide written answers, but Big Oil dodged it and flatly refused to answer basic questions. This hearing will help find answers to gas price hikes and help us make sure that doesn’t happen again,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said.

Governor Newsom spoke of those record gains as Californians paid for price hikes at the pump.

This upcoming hearing follows the CEC, which has requested written answers to questions about price spikes despite falling crude prices — questions the companies, for the most part, have not responded to in writing.

In the third quarter of 2022, July through September, oil companies reported record earnings:

This follows a report showing that refiners like PBF Energy are making more profits with Californians than any other state — $0.78 per gallon compared to the national average of $0.50, a difference of 56%. According to Consumer Watchdog, “PBF reported that it made 78 cents a gallon in California in the third quarter from refining crude oil into gasoline — the largest crude gains of any nation or world.” In contrast, PBF’s profit per gallon was 48 cents per gallon on the Gulf Coast, 49 cents per gallon on the East Coast, 55 cents per gallon in the Midwest — an average of 50 cents in the rest of America.”

Big Oil made these record gains at a time when Californians were seeing gas price hikes at the pump even as crude oil prices had fallen:

Gov. Newsom has taken action to lower prices at the pump by mandating the switch to winter blend gasoline and holding oil companies and refiners operating in California accountable, resulting in record consumer relief at the pump. Since California’s record high gas prices of $6.42, the governor’s actions last brought those prices down to $5.47 — down 95 cents.

The US State Department said on Monday that Saudi Arabia’s decision to accept Chinese President Xi Jinping was a “sovereign decision”.

“The point that we have consistently emphasized throughout this administration is that we are not asking countries around the world to choose between the United States and the United States [People’s Republic of China]’ Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters. “We’re not asking countries around the world to choose between the United States and any other country. Countries will make their own sovereign decisions about their foreign policies, about their relationships, about their partnerships and alliances.”

America’s goal, Price added, is to give countries around the world a choice. “And we want to make the United States choice and what we’re bringing to the table the most attractive option available.”

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Bin Farhan announced last Thursday that Xi Jinping would visit the kingdom soon, but did not give a date. During a meeting of the China-Saudi Arabia Joint Committee, Bin Farhan stressed the strength of ties between Riyadh and Beijing, saying they had achieved tangible results over the years.

“The Kingdom gives priority to bilateral relations with China,” said the minister, “and always strives to coordinate positions on issues affecting the two countries.”

READ: Saudi Arabia, China discuss strengthening mutual ties

That Guardian quoted Saudi sources in August as saying that unlike US President Joe Biden’s reception in July, the Chinese leader will have a legendary reception.

This will be Xi Jinping’s first visit to the kingdom since 2016. The Chinese president’s trip to the kingdom comes at a time of tension in US-Saudi Arabia relations over the decision by the OPEC+ alliance, led by Riyadh, to cut oil production.

Talks were under way within the Biden administration to impose punitive measures on Saudi Arabia, including a reduction in military support, in response to the OPEC decision, according to a US TV channel over the weekend.

Kansas City’s West Bottoms Revitalization is a real boon in the bottoms, 4th-6th Nov

KANSAS CITY, MON, October 28, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The Historic West Bottoms District is celebrating the 15th Anniversary of the First Festival of the Full Moon today 4th to 6th November with the theme Blessings in the Bottoms. The festival takes place around the first Friday weekend to incorporate street entertainment, food and a different theme each month, often around the month’s moon and upcoming holidays, all hosted by Full Moon Productions.

The theme of blessings is related to the Thanksgiving holiday and the blessings many shopkeepers express to their customers and assets in order to maintain a quality inventory of vintage, antique, unique and exceptional items that interest shoppers. The 13 blocks of these multi-storey, “warehouse-sized” buildings and their shopping floors abound with themed photo opportunities.

In 2007, Good JuJu, the first vintage store in the West Bottoms, wanted to create a shopping experience that was more purposeful in its presentation. They went beyond the norm to display their wares in a way that achieved a collective “look” as opposed to a flea market exhibit which is more random and divided by booth walls.

Other stores, including Bottoms Up, with the same aesthetic, soon moved to the West Bottoms, and Full Moon Productions began hosting First Friday weekend events. The owners of Serendipity KC started out as salespeople at the Good JuJu store and have transitioned from a booth in the Bottoms to store owner over the past 13 years. Bella Patina celebrated 11 years in 2022 and Ugly Glass 10 years. Dusted Attic has been in the area for seven years and Robin’s Nest for six. Rustic Vintage Rose is also a favorite that people seek over the years.

Fans of the Bottoms also make it a tradition to visit stores that have a more masculine appeal, like 12-year-old Stuffology, West Bottoms Whiskey, and Stockyard BBQ Rub and Sauces. Some newer places to check out include the Fountain City Winery, the Boutique Treasures on the 13ththand a new Escape Room added to Full Moon Escape Games.

Many stores house different vendors, but the look is one seamless display that works together to create a cohesive, uncluttered shopping experience. Today there are over 30 storefronts in the Historic West Bottoms, many of which now mix new items and things that artists made to offer an eclectic mix of products with their vintage items, antiques and clothing.

Before the area was fashionable for its huge vintage and antique shops, the neighborhood awoke from its post-1950s flood in 1988, when the spirited Edge of Hell Haunted House moved in. The meeting place moved away from City Market after it was rededicated. Now, 35 years later, the haunted attractions are still a mainstay in the community, albeit at night and the season is short. Due to popular demand, Full Moon Productions announced that the haunted season will be extended November 11th and 12 as the last weekend of the season for animal, edge of helland Macabre cinema haunted houses. They open at 19:30 o’clock and close once the crowds clear.

“We’re going from Haunting Boos to Blessings,” said Amber Arnett-Bequeath, district spokeswoman and also known as the Queen of Haunts. “It’s all in a day’s work, but it was decades in the making. We’re proud to celebrate 15 years of the Festival of the Full Moon and the 35 year milestone of the hauntings of the West Bottoms, so don’t be afraid to come down. The festival’s November moon is the Frost Moon, named because it typically marks the time of the first hard frost. For us, the frost will also be a sprinkle of all Christmas and holiday products that are available now.”

Many shops will also be open most Fridays and Saturdays. The next event on the West Bottoms’ First Friday Weekend is loops in the bottoms, what’s going on 2nd-4th December and every Friday and Saturday through December 17th.
