Downing Street has been accused of hosting two parties on the eve of Prince Philip’s funeral last year.

Eyewitnesses have told The Telegraph how two events were thrown at Number 10 on April 16, despite lockdown rules preventing such behaviour.

One event was the departure of James Slack, Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s director of communications.

Some Downing Street staff reportedly gathered for the farewell party and eventually headed out to the garden with their drinks.

The alleged parties ended hours before the Queen was forced to sit alone to say goodbye to her husband. Credit: Alamy

A partygoer also allegedly managed to break a swing outside belonging to Mr Johnson’s son Wilf.

A Downing Street spokesman told LADbible: “On that person’s last day [James Slack] gave a farewell speech to thank each team for the work done to support him, both those who had to be in the office for work and those who worked from home on the screen.”

The other party, reportedly held the same evening (April 16), was a farewell for one of the Prime Minister’s personal photographers.

This one was described by someone as being made up of much younger staff and having a “party atmosphere with blaring music”.

At one point, an employee was allegedly ordered to go to a nearby co-op with a briefcase to buy alcohol.

A witness told The Telegraph that people were “concerned about too much wine being spilled on the basement carpet‘ so they went upstairs.

People who have confessed to the British newspaper said the parties consisted of “excessive drinking” and there was even dancing at the latter.

One participant reported that the two gatherings took place in different parts of Number 10 before eventually merging.

One person said the soirees lasted into the early hours of April 17.

Boris Johnson did not attend either event.

It’s a damning accusation for the British government because tens of millions of Britons played by the rules back then. But it’s even worse because it happened specifically last year.

Just hours after the alleged parties ended, Queen Elizabeth II sat in a private chapel at Windsor Castle to say goodbye to her husband, who had lived for more than seven decades.

Pictures of the British monarch sitting almost entirely alone in the chapel broke people’s hearts as social distancing rules required Prince Philip’s funeral to be a small ceremony.

The UK was in step 2 of lockdown easing at the time, but the rules meant citizens could not socialize indoors with people from outside their household. People could only meet outside in groups of six or two households.

These two alleged parties add to a growing list of gatherings Downing Street is said to have hosted over the past two years while lockdown measures were put in place.

The Queen was forced to sit alone to say goodbye to her husband of seven decades while staff at Number 10 left their hair down the night before.

divide

WordPress websites are common to many businesses, organizations, and individuals. They require less technical knowledge to build and manage. However, it would be helpful if you could still find a web host provider to host your site. Choosing a web host provider can be a challenge given the many providers available online. You need to consider the needs of your WordPress site so that you can narrow down your search before considering other technical aspects.
WordPress hosting will be valuable to the success of your business, so you need to choose the most suitable for your website. Here are some tips to keep in mind when choosing a hosting service.

Check scalability potential

When you create a website, be it for personal or business use, expect it to grow as your business grows. A good web host should understand such a need and provide you with a platform for expansion. A good host should be flexible in this case. You should be able to accommodate different websites so that they can adapt to the needs of your business. The more packages a web hosting service provider has, the better. This means that if you need to, you can easily upgrade to a service with more advanced features.

Check safety functions

Web security is an important consideration when choosing a hosting service. There are many scammers out there waiting for the slightest chance to break into your website and steal your data. Many companies report that they lose sensitive information to such criminals every year. Getting their hands on your website can be detrimental to the success of your business. So security is of the utmost importance when looking for this service. Take the time to review the security features of each provider that you are shortlisting. Check features such as SSL certificates, firewall and available backup solutions. Also, check to see if the provider has ever had a security breach case or cases.

Server performance or speed

When choosing a web host provider, you need to consider server performance. This service includes, among other things, the operating time, the requests that the server can manage at the same time, and the loading speed. You don’t want a website to load or hang for too long. If you want to get traffic, your site should be interactive and fun to use. Make sure you get a hosting provider that will give your users the best experience.

Assistance offered

WordPress hosting services must have a support system. Although WordPress is not that technical, there are some cases that you need the hosting services to solve some problems that are outside of your technical scope. In this case, you need a hosting provider with reliable support. You need one that you can reach on call or otherwise at any time of the day or night. Your website will receive visitors any time of the day or night, so it’s important to keep it up and running at all times. In the event of technical malfunctions, your provider should always be available to take care of them. The best way to identify such a provider is to check their help documentation on their website and view their services.

recommendations

Use recommendations to find good or reliable web hosting service providers. If a provider has been around for a long time and provides good service, then that provider certainly has a good reputation. Each vendor you choose has most likely served multiple customers. Instead of just being blind and choosing whatever your search throws at you, take the time to read reviews and ask about the people you choose. Many people on the Internet, especially on social media, will be happy to provide you with information about various service providers for free. Take the time to talk to people about the different web hosting service providers available, then choose one from a knowledge point.

Take the cost into account

You need to know how much you will be paying your host provider. Price is crucial as most providers offer different packages at different prices. The more you play, the more features and services you should get. If you’re not careful, you might pay for a more advanced package but end up with a lower one. If you are inexperienced, ask a friend who has a WordPress website to make sure you are getting great value for money. There are basic features like email, backup and restore, and SSL certification that you should get for the most basic packages. You can always spice up your budget to get these features if you want more.

ATHENS – Concord University is among the colleges set to host a new academic competition in West Virginia this year, bringing together high school teams from across the state for regional match-ups.

West Virginia Senate President Craig Blair, President of the State Board of Education Miller Hall, State Superintendent of Schools W. Clayton Burch, and West Virginia Chancellor of Higher Education Sarah Armstrong Tucker gave a press conference this week announced the new academic showdown at the State Capitol.

The West Virginia Academic Showdown is a head-to-head competition between West Virginia high school teams and a partnership between the West Virginia Department of Education, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, West Virginia Public Broadcasting, and West Virginia Department of Art, Culture and History.

Sponsored by Senator Craig Blair, R-15th District, the program begins January 15th at Marshall University as the first of five regional games.

The Academic Showdown takes place on February 12th at Concord University in Mercer County. Participants will meet in the main auditorium of the Alexander Fine Arts Building.

The Academic Showdown Championship is held on March 25th at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston.

“It’s always important to celebrate the achievements of our fellows in a similar way that we celebrate the student athletes,” Blair said. “These young people are committed to academic excellence and eager for the intellectual sparring that the showdown offers. We are happy to offer the teams a platform to compete at this level. “

The competition questions include literature, math, history, science, geography, visual arts, religion / mythology, social science, philosophy, current events, pop culture, and general knowledge. Schools can form teams of four students from grades 9-12, with an optional fifth team member acting as a deputy. In the opening year, 29 teams from 19 schools take part.

“Our schools have once again demonstrated the resilience and commitment of our students, who enthusiastically accepted this opportunity,” said Burch. “You’ve worked tirelessly over the past semester to prepare for the Regionals and we know this will be an exceptional opening season. Many schools that have not been able to organize teams this season are planning to participate next year. “

Universities will host the Regionals to bring the state’s best academics and family members to campus for them to explore more closely what college offers and student life.

“We are very excited that higher education has had the opportunity to be part of this unprecedented new program, and I know that each of our first host universities plan to host exceptional regional events for the teams,” said Tucker. “I can’t think of a better way to showcase our colleges and universities to academic excellence from across the state. This is a shining example of how K-12 and higher education continue to work together to help students reach their full potential. “

The West Virginia Academic Showdown uses official National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) questions for all regional and championship games. As the competitions are held one after the other, questions can be repeated at multiple locations, so recordings are not permitted during the events. For further information, click here.

The competition rules will be published on the WVDE website and details of each region will be given in media releases prior to local events.

The Dallas Mavericks will share the limelight with the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday when Dirk Nowitzki’s # 41 jersey is retired.

Nowitzki retired as the Mavericks’ all-time leader in most categories in 2019, including points and rebounds. His total career score (31,560) ranks sixth on the NBA all-time list.

Nowitzki played all 21 of his NBA seasons with the Mavericks. The 14-time All-Star is also linked through his relationship with Don Nelson with the Warriors, the legendary Golden State trainer who staged the 1998 draft night takeover of the German star from the Milwaukee Bucks in Dallas.

“I admire Dirk and I absolutely love him for so many reasons,” said current Warriors coach Steve Kerr at the time of his retirement. “I love the way he plays. His way of carrying himself, he doesn’t take himself too seriously and still works incredibly hard at his craft. What a great combination.”

Nelson, who put together 422 of his NBA record of 1,335 coaching victories with the Warriors and 339 with the Mavericks, is expected at the ceremony. He was running the show at the Golden State when Stephen Curry was drafted in 2009.

NBA commissioner Adam Silver is also expected to attend the celebrations.

European compatriot Luka Doncic, the current face of the Mavericks franchise, said he was looking forward to the historic night.

“He’s done a lot of things, not just for people from Europe but in the United States,” said 22-year-old Doncic. “Everyone has the highest respect for him, the highest of everything. They simply enjoyed watching him play. Also in Europe. Especially the children. They grow up in Europe, they know Dirk. Everyone from Europe follows Dirk, so he has respect from everyone. “

The game consists of two teams who want to bring healthier squads into longer winning streaks.

Still awaiting the go-ahead for Klay Thompson and James Wiseman, the Warriors had every other player available on Monday as a formidable team effort overcame a rare night for Curry in a 115-108 home win over the Miami Heat.

Jordan Poole took 32 points against the heat in his second outing after a COVID-related absence of six games. Draymond Green has scored five points, eight rebounds, 13 assists and four blocks on his return from an absence of two games in the league’s log.

Curry was held at a season low of nine points for Golden State, which has won five of their last six games.

The Mavericks welcomed Doncic and Tim Hardaway Jr. from the COVID-19 protocol with consecutive victories over the Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets.

Doncic returned with a swing after missing 10 straight games while also sustaining an ankle injury. He averaged 17.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 12.5 assists in victories over the Thunder and Nuggets.

Hardaway returned to a total of 21 points in victories after a six-game break.

Dallas is left without Kristaps Porzingis, who was entered on the COVID logs prior to Sunday’s victory in Oklahoma City.

The Sonoma County Library hosts its sixth annual Mock Caldecott Competition, in which the community selects the best illustrated children’s books of the year.

Starting this week, picture book lovers are invited to enter the library’s Mock Caldecott competition and vote for their favorite picture books published last year. The Real Caldecott Medal is one of the most prestigious awards in children’s literature, and the library’s mock-up Caldecott enables local children and families to help select the best picture book in Sonoma County.

For our local competition, which has been running since 2016, a team of the county’s children’s librarians selects a short list of titles that meet the criteria of the books that are eligible for the Caldecott Medal. Until January 20th, all SCL branches encourage book lovers in our community to vote for the best picture book of the previous year. Referendum winners will receive an award sticker to encourage future readers to discover and enjoy the books our community has honored.

For the 2022 competition, people can come to the store to read the candidates or enjoy the books from home. All nominated books will be available online through live story readings by children’s librarians. Those who compete in the Mock Caldecott Challenge by using Beanstack to “read” each book will receive a special digital badge for completing the challenge. Vote for your favorite online at sonomalibrary.org/mockcaldecott or at a branch.

Until about 3 weeks ago, Sean Hayden’s Valerie restaurant on West 45th Street, just blocks from Times Square, was temporarily closed after employees tested positive for COVID-19.

“It was disheartening because it happened so quickly that you didn’t have time to think about it. First company parties were canceled, ”said Hayden, the owner of the Valerie restaurant.

“The next thing is an employee who gets sick. It’s two or three next, and before you know it we’ve got eight or ten people out there, ”he continued.

The doors of the restaurant will not reopen until Monday. Hayden said his staff are now back to 100%, on time for New Years Eve celebrations.

“We follow all guidelines. We follow CDC guidelines, we follow guidelines from the Department of Health. Everyone who comes in needs to be vaccinated, all of our employees are vaccinated, ”said Hayden.

Despite some cancellations for the restaurant’s New Years Eve event, Hayden said seats filled up quickly and expects the celebration to go smoothly. Hana Belcher just got into town from Florida and said that’s what she’s looking forward to the most.

“I can’t wait to be with people. I’m definitely excited, ”said Belcher.

Hayden said he was optimistic about the impact of Mayor-elect Adams’ administration in the new year.

“We’ll see. I like what he says. I think he’s very positive about crime and city restoration and he understands that the restaurants are the soul of the city,” said Hayden

He hopes business will continue as usual.

“We cannot afford to be unemployed again in all sectors,” said Hayden. “You see what happened to the airline chaos over the holidays. You see what is happening through FDNY and EMS. People have to go back to work.”

First came a March Madness like no other before. Then there was the Indianapolis 500 and all of the related events. In December, a full capacity Big Ten championship football game was played at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Indianapolis, long considered a city that knows how to host major sporting events, did so in 2021 even as the COVID-19 pandemic continued. Every step along the way showed where the public stood with pandemic fatigue and risk tolerance.

In the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, which was played almost exclusively in the arenas of Indianapolis, the NCAA allowed a capacity of up to 25% for all rounds. The Elite Eight, Final Four and the national championship at Lucas Oil Stadium could accommodate approximately 17,500 fans per competition.

(Photo by Brett Wilhelm / NCAA Photos via Getty Images)

The relatively few fans who were allowed to participate in NCAA tournament games were in strictly regulated rooms. Participants reminded people to put their mask on, and there were constant prompts to wear a mask unless she was actively eating or drinking.

When it was time for the Indianapolis 500 two months later, capacity was capped to 40%, but that’s a deceptive number considering the enormous size of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. This allowed around 135,000 spectators to take part. It was the biggest rush at a sporting event since the pandemic began.

Although the 500 attracted a large number of visitors, one important factor is that it is an outdoor event that spans 560 acres. Even when the race is almost at full capacity, the spectators can find space on the infield lawn to escape the crowds.

By the time college football hit it would have been difficult to tell that the US was still in the middle of a pandemic as the crowds were back at full capacity and masks were largely optional.

Michigan and Iowa played to more than 67,000 mostly maskless fans at Lucas Oil Stadium on December 4th. The wearing of a mask was encouraged but not compulsory.

It’s hard to say what kind, if any, of the COVID-19 spikes were caused by major sporting events.

There was a spike in Marion County shortly after the Big Ten soccer championship, likely due to the more contagious Omicron variant. The Indianapolis 500 also roughly coincided with the rise of the Delta variant, and the race took place on Memorial Day weekend when more people and families gathered.

The 7-day moving average for cases rose slightly in early April after the NCAA tournament. It was around 80 in mid-March and reached 170 by April 17, before declining again.

Indianapolis will host the College Football Playoffs National Championship on January 10, 2022. The playoff committee plans to postpone the game to January 14th as the Omicron variant makes its way into some college football programs during the bowl season.

In some corners of the internet, self-hosting is a big deal. There’s a huge community in places like Reddit, some great podcasts, and so many helpful resources to learn from.

But what does self-hosting actually mean?

Put simply, it’s about hosting your own services instead of relying on a public cloud wherever it’s coming from. It could be file storage, it could be a media server, home automation system, security cameras, whatever, there is probably someone out there who has at least tried to host it themselves.

I was very happy with my little home setup and the journey I took myself on. I’ve started learning some skills along the way, and as we move into 2022, here’s a little bit about the what, the why, and what’s to come.

Why even bother hosting yourself?

Homer dashboardSource: Windows headquarters

Public cloud services are extremely convenient. That’s why they’re so popular. And I’m not saying services like OneDrive are bad; far from it. But for reasons I don’t fully understand (maybe older and angrier, maybe lockdown boredom), by 2021 I began to be more interested in which companies had access to my data.

Some of it revolves around data protection, but I also become skeptical that if I have too many services I have to rely on a few large cloud providers. The recent AWS outages serve as a clear reminder that if something goes wrong, I will not be able to properly access my doorbell. That seems like a ridiculous problem.

So I started thinking about what I could do to both look after my data, and the rabbit hole then led to self-hosting. I haven’t replaced everything that relies on someone else’s infrastructure, but I’ve made a start. And maybe I’m a little surprised at how enjoyable the whole process was.

Learn new skills on the side

One of the best parts of this whole process was learning some new skills. I’m hardly an expert on any of them, but without digging into self-hosting I probably would never have touched any of it.

I’ve been learning to use Linux since the first big lockdown in 2020 when I got bored and thought I’d give it a try. But that’s always been at the desktop level like Windows 11. By self-hosting, I’ve started dabbling in the world of servers and Docker containers as I learned more about tools like SSH and even networking basics.

I love learning new IT skills, but I’ve definitely gotten a little lazy over the past few years. For the past few months I’ve been looking at Ubuntu Server, Docker, Portainer, creating my own configuration files, and the wonders of VLANs until I got down to self-hosting. And the great thing is that it really is an endless rabbit hole. One thing leads to another, what leads to another, and so on.

Even though I’d spent more time using Linux a year ago, particularly WSL on Windows 10, the command line still put me off. In 2022, I find that working in a terminal is strangely satisfying.

What I actually host myself

So, for the better: What do I actually host myself? I’ve tried a number of different apps and services on multiple devices. I started with my Synology NAS before branching out a little and repurposing old hardware. I have a 2012 Apple Mac Mini that is now useless as a Mac, but it’s a fantastic little server box. My old Raspberry Pi 3 was found in a drawer and it works too.

The main service I fell in love with this year is AdGuard Home. I’ve used Pi-Hole in the past but never really got stuck with it. As good as it is, my inner newbie is much better at home with AdGuard Home’s sleek user interface and more beginner-friendly approach. It’s running on my Raspberry Pi right now, although it may be postponed in 2022 when I finally get the right fiber.

A rudimentary local file server also runs on the same Raspberry Pi. It’s a simple samba setup that exists mainly because I read a blog post about it and thought I’d give it a try. It’s set up with a small USB flash drive connected to the Pi, and I use it to share files on my home network that I don’t need long-term or to sync across all of my devices. It probably won’t be long now, but it came in handy.

Most of the load is currently on the old Mac Mini. Of course, it doesn’t run on macOS, but rather using Ubuntu Server 20.04 LTS. Even for a computer that is nearly 10 years old, Ubuntu Server is extremely light without the burden of a desktop environment. And currently everything lives here in a Docker container that is managed via the Portainer GUI.

Portainer is especially good for Docker newbies like me as it eliminates the need to process Docker Compose files directly. You can either use one of the pre-selected app templates or just point to the Docker image for the service you want to set up and leave the rest to it. All that is required to access the apps is a web browser.

Currently hosted there:

  • Podgrave – A local podcast server that enables streaming or downloads and can generate OPML or custom RSS feeds for use on other devices.
  • Whoogle – Google search, but without Google’s crap. The search results are identical, but faster and much cleaner without ads and trackers.
  • Libreddit – A tracker-free, extremely fast front end for Reddit. You can’t log in but if you never comment, like me, the experience is pretty much perfect.
  • YouTube DL – A GUI for the popular YouTube DL command line app.
  • Homer – A customizable dashboard for accessing self-hosted services and more.
  • guacamole – A clientless remote access gateway that allows easy SSH access to my various devices through a web browser.

And on my Synology NAS, thanks to HDHomeRun integration, I finally got around to setting up a Plex server with live TV and DVR again. I have also used Nextcloud in the last few months, set up on a DigitalOcean remote instance. Nextcloud is really fantastic and I use it for a number of purposes including syncing offline copies of my work for the site, managing calendars and emails, file backups and syncing, and even handling RSS.

All of the services I host myself, with the exception of Plex, are free and open source, which was another priority in 2021.

2022: Homelab

To say that I am addicted to self-hosting is an understatement. It’s addicting, and much like building a gaming PC, there’s always the “next step” with hardware and software.

In 2022, I’m determined to continue what I have learned and build on it, developing more skills and trying things out that I would previously have run away from at full speed like Forrest Gump. So I dive into the world of homelabs that comes with self-hosting.

A homelab can be a giant server rack with thousands of dollars in equipment, or it can be a Raspberry Pi. And everything in between. Most of the services I’ve used are incredibly lightweight, which means you really don’t have to spend money on new, expensive hardware.

ESXiSource: VMWare

But I’m looking for expansion. On the list of things to learn in 2022 is virtualization with Proxmox / VMWare ESXi, Kubernetes and (finally) learning to program, well, something. I’m planning on buying another 2012 Mac Mini or something similarly old, small, and cheap to wrap it up maybe, and at least a Raspberry Pi 4.

I have already built a cheap home server rack out of an IKEA lacquer table of all places (post will be added in the new year) and grabbed some ex-company network devices for Peanuts to set up a fully wired network in my office the home WiFi.

We have no idea if 2022 is going to be better or worse than 2020 and 2021 at this point, but I’m getting into the game with a new hobby and a pretty extensive to-do list.
