Glendale, Arizona (3TV/CBS 5) – Have you ever wondered if you have what it takes to be a firefighter? Some kids from the Valley are hearing about it firsthand this week at the Peoria Youth Fire Academy.

The summer camp, held in Glendale, teaches children ages 16 to 19 the lifesaving techniques used by firefighters on the scene, from extrication from cars to rappelling. The free academy also covered search and rescue, team building, hose power management, educational opportunities and more.

Arizona family meteorologist Ian Schwartz visited the camp and spoke to some of the campers. “It’s a great program for them,” said Capt. Danny Comella. “They start out a little shy and now they work as a team, as you can see out here today.” He added that many campers become firefighters after high school. “They basically become a family, just like at a fire station,” the captain said.

A camper named Kyle, a recent graduate of Mountain Ridge High School, said the camp was great. “Couldn’t ask for a better day,” he said. “I turned 19 not that long ago, so I’m going to do my EMT license, then hopefully my Fire I and II and see if I can come to the Peoria Department.”

For years, Donna Stephenson’s mission has been to promote the game of field hockey in western Pennsylvania.

When she was offered the unique opportunity to run a clinic with classes from nationally renowned coaches and former US internationals, it was a no-brainer.

Pine-Richland will host a field hockey clinic for prospective collegiate athletes July 16-18.

The clinic is taught and reviewed by USA Field Hockey Foundation and former Yale coach Pam Stuper, former US National Team head coach/player Caroline Nelson-Nichols, and former Brown coach and international Jill Reeve, among others. All instructors have trained at the NCAA Division I level and there are four former Olympians in the group.

“The roster of coaches for this clinic is something I’ve never really seen,” Stephenson said. “It’s really the first of its kind with coaches of this caliber coming here. This will be really beneficial for girls who want to play in college as they get assessed by those coaches, and anyone who wants to get better or learn the game.”

The clinic consists of three parts in one.

There is a Development Clinic for fourth through eighth graders July 17-18 that costs $195 to attend, and a Trainer Clinic where coaches learn strategies from the clinic instructors July 17-18 at a cost of $75 U.S. dollar. If five players from the coach’s team register for the clinic, participation in the coach’s clinic is free of charge.

The uniqueness comes in part three, which is the first of its kind for field hockey for the Future College Athlete organization. It is every three days and is for eighth through twelfth graders. Participation costs US$450.

For more information about the individual clinics and how to register, visit www.prfieldhockey.com.

It is the first time that Future College Athlete has conducted an assessment clinic.

“The assessments can be used during the recruitment process and for them to work on skills, but it’s also intended for girls who are doing better in high school and want to learn where they excel and where they need to put a little more time into it.” to hone their game skills,” said Future College Athlete Coordinator Riki-Ann Serrins.

Serrins said Future College Athlete has been conducting field hockey clinics for eight years but has primarily focused on college ID clinics in the past.

Written reviews were suggested by parents and players in previous clinics, so they decided to organize a review clinic.

The judging process is broken down into six parts: Technique, Offensive and Defensive Tactics, Gameplay, Physicality, and Athletics.

“Each individual coach will gather at the end of each individual and discuss each player and their thoughts, so at the end of the clinic the evaluations will come from the entire staff,” Serrins said. “It won’t just be a coach filling out an evaluation for a player. The coaches put a lot into it. All of these coaches are well known and respected across the country, so the girls can take the written review to almost any college coach and they recognize the reviewers and take that to heart.”

Hailing from the same New York hometown as Reeve, Stephenson has been in touch with her for years, leading to Pine-Richland hosting the event. She said some of her players at Pine-Richland will be attending the clinic and that players from across the region will be doing the same.

“This is open to all players in the region, and we’ll also likely have players in the surrounding areas like Ohio, western New York and central Pennsylvania,” Stephenson said. “We’re trying to cast a wide net for these girls to have the opportunity to benefit from what these coaches have to offer.”

The city of Madrid has officially expressed interest in hosting a Formula 1 race, the city’s regional government announced on Thursday.

Although Spain is already hosting a race in Barcelona, which has a contract until 2026, and there are no F1 tracks in Madrid, the Spanish capital’s local government believes it can start talks with promoter Liberty Media about hosting a Grand Prix .

“I would like to reiterate our commitment to you and this project and our willingness to sign the appropriate agreements to promote the race and provide a great sporting and entertainment spectacle,” local government cabinet minister Enrique Lopez wrote in a letter to F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

Further details about the offer were not disclosed. and Formula 1 organizers declined to comment.

Madrid hosted F1 Grands Prix between 1968 and 1981 at the Jarama Circuit, which is outdated and would need a major upgrade to host a race again.

Last year the local government of Morata de Tajuna, 36km south of Madrid, confirmed that they aim to build an FIA Class 1 track with the aim of hosting F1 and MotoGP races in the future.

A record 23 Formula One races are scheduled for this year and while organizers are keen to expand the sport’s geographic reach, they have primarily looked to venues in Africa and the United States.

Just a few months after competing in an international championship, a local robotics team is back at work preparing for another competition—not only as a competitor, but also as a host.

Team 4926 or “GalacTech” will be hosting the 2022 Indiana Robotics Invitational (IRI) on July 16-17 at Columbus East High School. There is no entry fee for spectators, and teams from across North America have been invited to enter the competition, said Sam Geckler, president of Columbus Robotics and founder of Team 4926.

The event follows an eventful season. In April, GalacTech was part of the winning alliance at the Indiana State Championship For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST). The team then competed at the FIRST International Championship in Houston, making the division playoffs but not the final tournament. More than 450 high school teams from around the world competed in the 2022 FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Championships, including groups from near Indianapolis and as far away as Israel.

Team 4926 also had their first-ever home game in March, with Columbus East hosting the first FRC event ever hosted in Columbus.

“It’s been a wild year, that’s for sure,” Geckler said.

While the March event was part of the official season for FIRST, the Indiana Robotics Invitational is an off-season event. According to Geckler, the event has been held for more than 20 years. Teams first apply to compete, and then a certain number are invited to compete.

A few Indiana FRC teams were the “historic organizers” for IRI, including the Kil-A-Bytes (Team 1024 – Indianapolis), Cyber Blue (Team 234 – Indianapolis), and the TechnoKats (Team 45 – Kokomo). The event did not take place in 2020 and 2021.

The invitation was usually held at Lawrence Township schools. However, both Lawrence North and Lawrence Central High School are having some construction going on and will not be able to host this year.

“The organizing committee was down this year for the district event we had here and played at Columbus East,” Geckler said. “…They liked the venue so they asked us to host IRI, which was never in our plans. And the Organizing Committee and all of Team 4926 were pretty exhausted after the World Championship run, but it was an opportunity we really couldn’t pass up.”

The teams arrive on Friday 15th July with the games taking place on Saturday and Sunday. Geckler said they’re not sure which teams are coming at the moment, but 56 have been invited. This includes teams from across the United States and some from Canada and Mexico.

However, the invited teams do not always choose to participate due to travel expenses and shipping of the robotics equipment.

“In the past, teams from Israel and New Zealand have traveled to play at IRI, but unfortunately I don’t think the current economic climate is good for travel,” said Geckler.

He noted that the event was somewhat “unusual.” The competition will feature the usual setup for FIRST events – qualifiers, followed by alliance selections and playoffs – and will leverage the organization’s 2022 game, Rapid React.

However, IRI is also a charity event. Organizers will select a charity that will receive contributions from the event, including proceeds from a silent auction and a portion of entry fees paid by teams. There may also be a talent show.

The charity named is usually related to current events, Geckler said. In 2019, the event raised funds for Team 4418, or “Impulse,” of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, following a school shooting at the STEM School Highlands Ranch in May of that year.

“The person killed during the recent school shooting was one of us, Kendrick Castillo, a senior with FIRST Robotics Competition Team 4418, STEM IMPULSE from Colorado, USA,” FIRST officials said in a blog post just days after the tragedy . “He was in his senior week of high school and was planning to go to college to study engineering. Reports have surfaced that Kendrick brought down the shooter, likely preventing further deaths. He is rightly celebrated as a hero.”

The 2019 Indiana Robotics Invitational raised funds to help Team 4418 pay its entry fee for the upcoming FIRST season and to contribute to a victim support and memorial fund established by FIRST.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if something goes to Texas this year, but I can’t confirm that,” Geckler said.

Discussing the invitation, he said that the schedule for preparing the event is tight. Team 4926 had a year to plan for March’s district event, but the Invitational comes just months after the FIRST championship.

“We now have the largest student body since our inception,” he added. “We are almost overwhelmed. On summer nights I can bring 30 kids to the store – 30 high school kids trying to build robots. … We will be inundated. We’re trying to recruit new mentors to come and help these kids do the things they want to do.”

For example, the students designed a major modification to their robot – the same one that won the state championship – to increase its capacity, so the team is now building a second robot just for the invitational tournament. He admitted he wasn’t sure if they could finish it in time.

Still, anticipation is in the air as the Invitational approaches.

“This is a rare opportunity to see some of the best teams in the world – I know for sure because we played with some of them down in Texas,” said Geckler. “Some crazy robots will appear here. So we are excited.”

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) – Brockway Jr. Senior High School is hosting a camp exploration this week to learn more about manufacturing companies in the area.

Students in grades 7-12 learn valuable skills needed to work in a variety of industries. This week is specifically for manufacturing companies. Camps begin at Brockway Junior-Senior High School from 9am to 3pm. Each week there is a different variation of participating companies.

A group of students were brought to Phoenix Sintered Metals LLC for a tour of the facility. You could get private lessons in any part of the complex.

“I think it would be a pretty funny thing, but at the same time decently serious so you don’t screw anything up.” said eighth grader Hayden Irwin.

Later this week, students will visit Beverage Air, Gasbarre Products Inc. and Miller Fabrication where students can conduct hands-on activities and learn from the experts.

Colleen Prechtl, Project Coordinator for Workforce Solutions in North Central Pa. at the Workforce Development Board for the region, spoke about the importance of the camp in this region.

“We do camp explorations because the students can see what manufacturing careers we have in our area. A lot of students don’t realize that we have the same careers as Pittsburgh and Philadelphia or a bigger city. So they think their options are limited by where we live because we live in a rural community,” Prechtl said. “By showing the plants and careers in the plants, they see that they have the same opportunities as big cities, so we’re hoping to keep future workers here.”

Students can still register for these camps. They are open to everyone in grades 7-12. Contact Colleen Prechtl at cprechtl@ncwdb.org

HATBORO, Pa. (CBS) — On this Father’s Day, a local nonprofit is holding a Jeep caravan in honor of fallen Hatboro Police Officer Ryan Allen, who died in April after suffering a traumatic brain injury caused by an allergic reaction to a bee sting.

“I think the hardest part was giving birth and not having Ryan with me,” widow Whitney Allen said.

Allen was pregnant with her second child when her husband Ryan suffered a rare traumatic brain injury from a bee sting last October. He died on April 7 after more than six months in a coma, never being able to say goodbye to his 4-year-old son Jackson or meet his newborn son Leo.

“I see a lot of Ryan in Jackson and Leo,” Whitney said.

Ryan served as an officer for Hatboro and helped establish the department’s first K-9 unit.

“Becoming a cop, specifically a dog cop, was Ryan’s dream as a little boy,” Whitney said.

Whitney also says the support of Ryan’s colleagues and the community — many still show signs in his honor — meant everything, especially when tragedy struck twice.

“Ryan’s best friend Steve, who was a Warrington police officer, died six weeks after Ryan,” Whitney said.

Steve Plum Jr., a Warrington K-9 officer, died in a sudden medical event on May 16. He was a husband and father of five children.

“It’s Ryan and Steve training there,” Whitney said. “It brings me some peace if that had to happen to both of them, I know they’re together.”

Whitney is now working on a book to help others deal with grief. She says she takes it one day at a time because she knows Ryan will be in her heart forever.

“I know Ryan wants me and the boys to be happy, so I wake up every morning and I’m like, ‘What would he expect from me?'” Whitney said.

LAKE CITY — The Lake City Community Mother of Preschoolers (MOPS) is hosting their annual Touch A Truck fundraiser on Saturday, June 18th.

The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Missaukee County Road Commission

“This is our sixth time,” said Lacie Hejnal, the outgoing events coordinator. “And we collect literally every type of vehicle we can get our hands on.”

Since her organization was founded eight years ago, Hejnal said MOPS came up with the idea for the event to raise funds. Though it’s free to the public, she said people are welcome to donate and support MOPS.

Hejnal said they use the money primarily to help mothers in their group.

“If there is a situation with one of our mothers, we will draw from this pool of money to help with any needs she may have,” Hejnal said.

At the Touch A Truck event, Hejnal said they will have a variety of vehicles including emergency vehicles, farm equipment, construction equipment, logging trucks and more.

At each vehicle, Hejnal said, the drivers will be there to educate the kids about it and allow them to interact with it. The drivers also give out sweets and small prizes.

With over 30 vehicles and 50 drivers available, the event is always a great time for the community, according to Hejnal.

“It’s really fun to see an event like this in our community just because there aren’t that many,” she said.

“There’s a really unique energy there.”

As well as the return of some racing cars, Hejnal said they will also have a new mobile medical examination car from the Ministry of Transport.

As Hejnal coordinated the event for the last time, new coordinator Amanda Pearson said she was looking forward to seeing the excitement from the riders and the children.

“I don’t know who’s more excited, the kids or the people who volunteer their time with the trucks,” Pearson said. “The guys just go into it and say, ‘Yeah, you can blow the horn as many times as you want.'”

“So I’m just excited to see the interaction between kids and the people in our community who are volunteering their time.”

Coordinating her most recent Touch A Truck event, Hejnal said she’s enjoyed seeing the event grow over the years. Hejnal also said she is grateful to the sponsors and community for supporting the event over the years.

“We are very grateful to them because we couldn’t do it for free without them,” said Hejnal.

The Ryan McMahon Shooting Academy and Skills Clinic is held on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST. “We’ll take care of it,” McMahon said. “Three hours the first day, three hours the second day. We want to run a tight ship, make sure the kids get a lot out of it, make sure they have a lot of fun. Make sure they have some practice and life lessons they can use in the future to get better both on and off the court. There will also be a special appearance from former UofL forward Luke Hancock.
