Here are highlights of what’s happening in the area (or related to) our city from this weekend until the next. (Note: Thanks to June 16, next weekend will be long.)

Saturday 11 June 2022

  • Trottier Big Band on the radio (8:00 am – 12:00 pm) @ 90.5 WICN: The Saturday swing session hosted by Howard Caplan is accompanied by the middle school jazz band.
  • Learn to listen with LOVE (9:00 – 11:00) @ South Union Building, 21 Highland St: Workshop hosted by Southborough Youth & Family Services on the art of communicating in relationships. You will address some of the challenges and discuss critical elements of successful communication. Registration required. See related post for details.
  • Summer Book Sale (10am – 3pm) @ Southborough Library: The annual sale of Friends of Southborough Library in June sells books of all kinds as well as DVDs and CDs. A free book for each child. See the relevant post for details.
  • Autism center open house (11:00 am – 1:00 pm) @ Key Autism Service, 333 Turnpike Rd: Families are invited to enjoy complimentary ice cream, makeup and balloon spins. It’s an opportunity to see the new Southborough Autism Therapy Facility and ask questions. See the relevant post for details.
  • Barbecue in the pilgrimage church (5:00pm – 7:30pm) @ Pilgrim Church parking lot, 15 Common Street: Purchase tickets in advance to enjoy dinner, lawn games and music. See the relevant post for details.

  • Art on the Trails installation day (10:00 – 17:00) @ Beals Preserve: 15 artists will install their works as part of the 6th Annual Art on the Trails Exhibition. See the relevant post for details.

  • Hiking group for seniors (8:30am) @ Trottier Middle School Outdoor Track: Free walking group organized by Southborough Senior Center, see newsletter. Hikers generally walk for an hour, but as long as you like. The place is a loop so don’t hesitate to get in late.
  • Stretch break class for seniors (10:15am) @ Southborough Senior Center: See newsletter for details of weekly classes.
  • Story time in preschool (10:30 – 11:15) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: Join Miss Kim for stories and crafts on a weekly theme. No registration required.
  • youth writing club (3:30pm – 4:30pm) @ Zoom: The Southborough Library is hosting this virtual creative writing club for 10-18 year olds. The Zoom sessions are a fun and supportive space to get creative and build skills with your peers. See the relevant post for details.

  • Story time in preschool (10:30 – 11:15) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: Join Miss Kim for stories and crafts on a weekly theme. No registration required.
  • older singers (11am) @ Southborough Senior Center: Weekly rehearsal for the singing group, open to all seniors in the area, whatever their singing ability. For details see dedicated post.

  • Tuesday tech time (4pm – 5pm) @ Southborough Library Teen Room: Need tech help? The library staff and teenage volunteers will do everything they can to help you. Bring questions about e-books and electronic resources. This is a drop in event; no registrations necessary. Sessions are limited to a maximum of 1 hour.
  • poetry workshop (6:30pm – 8:30pm) @ Southborough Library: Bi-monthly meeting, open to all. Bring your original poems to share for constructive feedback. See Library for details website.
  • Webinar on family support for teen wellbeing (7:00 p.m.) @ Zoom: NSBORO’s Family Support Webinar Series is promoted as support for teen well-being. This session focuses on “Building healthy habits to improve physical and emotional health“. See the relevant post for details.
  • Trottier “Jazz Night” (7pm) @ Trottier Middle School: An evening of jazz with the Trottier Big Band and former saxophonist Connor Jenks. (Donations are accepted to supplement transportation costs and to purchase new equipment.)

  • Finn Walk to School Day (8:30 am) @21 Highland St: Walk with other Finnish students and parents as a group (or walk with an adult from home). Families should check the Thursday pack for details.
  • Hiking group for seniors (8:30am) @ Southborough Cemetery, 11 Cordaville Road: Free walking group organized by Southborough Senior Center, see newsletter. Hikers generally walk for an hour, but as long as you like. The place is a loop so don’t hesitate to get in late.
  • Young scientists MINT beginnings (10:30 – 11:30) @ Southborough Library Children’s Room: A free personal series for children ages 3-6 to explore STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) concepts through hands-on activities, story time and simple experiments . The Southborough Library program is sponsored by the YMCA Family & Community Partnership.
  • Food Truck Festival (3:30pm – 7:00pm) @ St Mark’s Meadow (corner of Rte 85 and Rte 30): A series of community events organized by the Southborough Rotary Club. This is the last session this spring. It will feature trucks from Travlin’ Bones, Birds Nest, DogFather, Bubbe’s Blintzes and Trombetta’s Ice Cream. See the relevant posts for details.

  • How to be an ally (6:30pm) @ 21 Highland Street: How to Be a Sensitive and Informed LGBTQ+ Ally Training is offered by Southborough Youth and Family Services in recognition of Pride Month. The program is managed by GSA Link’s. See the relevant post for details.
  • Society for Genealogy (7pm – 8.30pm) @ Southborough Library, Ground Floor: This is an informal group meeting to learn and share tips on family history research resources. Group meetings are free and open to the public. Bring your laptop, log into the library at Ancestry.com, and get involved.

  • Boring Men’s Club (10:00 am) @ Zoom: Casual social club for older men. New members are always welcome. For more information, see dedicated post.
  • Farewell 5th grade (3:00pm – 5:00pm) @ Neary School: Fifth graders celebrate graduation from Neary Elementary with a DJ, bouncy castles, lawn games, a Dunk Tank, Alltown Fresh Pizza Oven and Uhlman’s Ice Cream. All of this is provided by Neary SOS.
  • 8th Class Trottier Banquet (7pm – 10pm) @ Trottier Middle School: The celebration for students about to graduate from K-8 schools in Southborough. Refreshments, DJs, dancing, photos and fun. (Advance registration and prepayment required.)

Saturday 18 June 2022

  • Read to a dog (11:00 – 11:45) @ Southborough Library Nursery: Children preferably aged 5 and over with some reading skills will read to Bear, a certified therapy dog. Please register in the Children’s Room for a time slot or email [email protected].
  • Summer Seed Exchange (11am – 12pm) @ Southborough Library Lawn: Are you ready to plant your seeds now that the weather is nicer outside? Stop by the Southborough Library outside for a garden set and tomato plant seedling (while supplies last). Each set includes seed packets based on one of three themes: (1) Grow Your Own Lettuce, (2) Sob With Pumpkins, or (3) Grow Your Own Herb Garden. Supplies will be limited, so be sure to check out this special Saturday event!
